Washing plea to avert tree plague

The environment secretary has urged the public to wash their dogs and boots and even their children after visiting wooded areas, to help stop the spread of a fungus which is killing ash trees.

Owen Paterson spoke after the government's emergency committee Cobra met to discuss the ash dieback menace.

Some 100,000 trees have been destroyed in the UK, where East Anglia has been particularly badly affected.

The infection has killed some 90% of ash trees in Denmark.

Ministers are concerned that the fungus could be present on fallen leaves and could be transferred via leaf mould.

Mr Paterson told the BBC: "Everyone should be responsible and if they do visit a wood just make sure they wash their boots, wash their dog, whatever's been running around the leaves, wash their child, to make sure they don't transfer to the next wood."

About 2,500 10sq km sites across the UK are being surveyed to establish how far the disease has spread, according to the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra).

Amid criticism from Labour, Mr Paterson denied the government had been slow to act when the infection was first discovered.

He said: "This disease was only established here on 7 March. During the summer, trees are not planted so a programme of inspection has gone on during which 100,000 trees have been destroyed.

"But as I have also made clear, this disease as we discovered recently has possibly blown in.

Symptoms of Chalara dieback

  • Diseased saplings typically display dead tops and side shoots.
  • Lesions often found at base of dead side shoots.
  • Lesions on branch or stem can cause wilting of foliage above.
  • Disease affects mature trees by killing off new growth.

"It's on the basis of that information that we're now working together right across government at the highest level, using expertise in every department, to bear down on the disease," he said.

Ash dieback, also known as Chalara dieback, is caused by the fungus Chalara Fraxinea.

The disease was first discovered in the UK in February in a consignment of trees imported from the Netherlands by a nursery in Buckinghamshire.

The Forestry Commission has said it has since been found at sites across England and Scotland, including Leicester, South Yorkshire, County Durham and in Knockmountain Woods near Glasgow.

The trees at all the locations above had been grown from young ash saplings obtained from nurseries within the past five years.

In October, scientists confirmed a spate of cases in Norfolk and Suffolk in trees not planted recently, which appear to form a wider infection zone.

Shadow environment secretary Mary Creagh has accused the government of "dithering" over the issue and has expressed concerns over cutbacks to the Forestry Commission's budget.

But environment minister David Heath denied there had been any cut back in resources "applied to plant health and tree health in this country".

Visible symptoms of ash dieback include leaf loss and crown dieback in affected trees and it can lead to tree death.

The disease has been listed as a quarantine pathogen under national emergency measures and the Forestry Commission has produced guidance, including help on how people can identify possible signs of infection.

Experts are urging people to report suspected cases of dieback in order to prevent the spread of the disease to the wider environment becoming established.

An app, Ashtag, has been launched to try to map the spread of the disease by allowing users to upload pictures and report possible sightings to a team which will pass any information to the Forestry Commission.

Family-owned pharmacy gives up retail locations, evolves to survive ...

BRUNSWICK, Maine ? A third-generation, family-owned Maine pharmacy has repositioned itself by investing in new space and equipment that are allowing it to flourish in a new market.

In some respects, Waltz Long Term Care Pharmacy in Brunswick is nothing like the retail pharmacies in most towns and cities across the country. There are no aisles of over-the-counter drugs, no counters where patients pick up prescriptions and interact with pharmacists. Nevertheless, Waltz fills and ships thousands of prescriptions each month throughout Maine.

Dean Jacobs, the company?s president and co-owner, comes from a long line of pharmacists in his family. His grandfather opened the first Waltz Pharmacy in Damariscotta in 1948, a business that eventually included several retail locations across the state.

About a decade ago, Waltz began to serve long-term care, or LTC, facilities such as nursing homes and group homes out of a back room at its Camden location. As the LTC business began to grow, Jacobs realized its potential.

To say the LTC business grew by leaps and bounds has a literal meaning for Waltz, which can take on dozens or hundreds of new patients within a single new contract. The venture quickly outgrew the back room in Camden. As the company has closed its retail pharmacy locations in the past four years (Jacobs? parents retired from the business last year), the LTC business has flourished. One retail location, in Waldoboro, remains.

From the back room in Camden, the LTC pharmacy moved to a larger space in Topsham, ?which at the time we thought was palatial,? said Courtney Oland, who co-founded Waltz LTC Pharmacy with Jacobs in 2007 and now serves as the director of pharmacy.

As the business continued to grow, Oland and Jacobs spent almost two years looking for space in the Brunswick area. They chose Brunswick because of its central location among Maine?s population centers, ensuring high numbers of potential patients and workers. They also forged a partnership with Guardian Pharmacy, which provides working capital and consultation services for Waltz, but allows it to operate as a wholly independent entity.

?They help us make well-informed decisions about where to invest our money,? said Oland. ?It?s very important to our survival that we continue to do that.?

In September, Waltz moved again, this time to the Brunswick Industrial Park, where it has leased 13,000 square feet in a building owned by Brunswick Publishing Co.

In addition to renovations, the company invested in cutting-edge technology that integrates ordering, processing, delivery and billing under one roof and within one computer network. The system allows workers at every step of the process to check and double-check prescriptions for accuracy, which is absolutely crucial in the pharmacy business.

There are machines that count pills and seal them into day-by-day bubble packs and others capable of slicing tablets into perfect halves or quarters. A bar-coding system requires checks at every stage in the process ? and sets off a siren if it detects a mistake. And a computer program measures workload in each of the company?s departments ? the results of which are broadcast on large-screen televisions throughout the facility ? so employees can quickly shift to another area that?s busier than theirs.

Despite all that technology, Jacobs and Oland said what separates Waltz from other LTC pharmacies remains customer support. The nine pharmacists on staff spend about half their time at the Brunswick headquarters and half their time on the road consulting with clients. In that respect, their role is not unlike a retail pharmacist?s job of ensuring that the right drugs treat the right ailments without harmful side effects.

Just two months after moving to the Brunswick building, Waltz and its 75 employees are processing some 30,000 prescriptions a month and shipping them to more than 100 locations across Maine.

Debbie Marquis of Lisbon said she was a bank teller before Waltz hired her and trained her to be a pharmacy technician.

?It?s the best job I?ve ever had,? she said while placing pills into a counting device. ?Counting pills is much cleaner than counting money.?

Jacobs said he sometimes misses his days working in a retail setting, but only sometimes.

?I began to realize that in the future, making investments in retail pharmacies was not going to be a good business decision,? he said. ?I realized that we could grow our customer base from this one facility. I love the business of pharmacy, but it?s a hard business.?

Group Adjourns Without Acting on Antarctic Reserve - NYTimes.com

PARIS ? Frustrating advocates, an international commission charged with overseeing the Southern Ocean took no action Thursday on a proposal championed by the United States and New Zealand to create the world?s largest marine reserve in the seas around Antarctica.

The two nations had proposed the creation of a 872,000-square-mile reserve in the Ross Sea and East Antarctic; conservationists wanted more, some 1.9 million square miles of protected area. Crucially, despite months of talks between Washington and New Zealand?s government in Wellington, the two countries went into the meeting in Hobart, Australia, with slightly different plans and had to work out a joint proposal early this week.

The Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources, whose members include the European Union and 24 member states, operates on a consensus principle, and the issue never came to a vote.
Gerald Leape, a marine policy official with the Pew Environment Group, said China and Russia had been the main opponents of the proposal, while Japan, South Korea and Ukraine had been lukewarm.

The Southern Ocean is one of the most important ecosystems on Earth, home to penguins, seals and whales, as well as vast populations of krill, one of the most important links in the ocean food chain.

A marine protected area can be a place where no commercial activity, including fishing and mineral exploration, is permitted, or an area in which only a few activities are banned. The commission said it would hold an inter-annual meeting ? an unusual step ? in July in Bremerhaven, Germany, to discuss the topic again.

?We?re very disappointed that CCAMLR didn?t take action,? Mr. Leape said. ?The scientific case for an M.P.A. in the Ross Sea and East Antarctica has been made.? Steve Campbell of the Antarctic Ocean Alliance said that 1.2 million people around the world had joined environmental organizations in backing the creation of marine reserves.

The commission has been criticized for holding its meetings behind closed doors out of sight of journalists. But the Southern and Antarctic Ocean Alliance, a coalition that includes environmental and conservation organizations like Greenpeace, W.W.F. and the International Fund for Animal Welfare, has observer status and reports on its activities to the media.

Conservationists said the meeting had not been a complete loss, as the commission adopted a proposal championed by the United States and European Union requiring it to inspect all vessels fishing in the Southern Ocean instead of only those carrying toothfish, commonly known as Chilean sea bass. The Pew Environment Group said in a statement that the action ?closed an important gap.?

Toothfish grow slowly, and little is known about the fishery. That has not stopped large-scale exploitation of the stock, with illegal fishing commonplace for many years.

Habana da man ? | Front Row Grunt

At a pretty cool function held at the Cape Town airport of all places last night, Bryan Habana was named as the SA Player of the Year for the third time.

Habana was in superb form for the Boks this year, scoring seven tries, including a hat-trick against Australia at Loftus, resulting in him being the top try scorer in the Four Nations. He becomes only the second player to win the title more than two times, following in the footsteps of Naas Botha, who won it four times.

Big thanks to the Energade team for inviting me ? Might need a few of those today in order to come right in time for the Sharks supporters golf day!!

The winners:

Rugby Player of the Year: Bryan Habana

Young Player of the Year: Eben Etzebeth

Team of the Year: The Sharks (Currie Cup)

Coach of the Year: John Plumtree (Sharks).

Super Rugby Player of the Year: Keegan Daniel (Sharks)

Currie Cup Player of the Year: Deon Fourie (Western Province)

Currie Cup First Division Player of the Year: Hansie Graaff (Griffons)

Vodacom Cup Player of the Year: Demetri Catrakilis (Western Province)

Players? Player of the Year: JP Pietersen (Sharks)

Sevens Player of the Year: Cecil Afrika

Try of the Year: Bryan Habana (Springboks v All Blacks).

SA Under-20 Player of the Year: Jan Serfontein (Blue Bulls)

Craven Week Player of the Tournament: Sergeal Petersen (Eastern Province)

Referee Award: Jaco Peyer

Women?s Achiever of the Year: Yolanda Meiring (Blue Bulls)

Club Champs Player of the Tournament: Nico Luus (Pretoria Police)

As said prior to the awards, I would have had Jannie du Plessis bringing home the bacon, but I have no issue at all with SA legenda Bryan Habana taking the title this year ? As said in my Virgin Active blog post this week: Bryan Habana you legend!

Quite clearly no one saw WP winning the Currie Cup this year, hence the Sharks taking the team of the year award, while WP were not even nominated. SARU might want to wait until after the Currie Cup before deciding on the nominations next year?

So the Currie Cup and Super Rugby players of the year cannot make it into the Bok EOYT squad? The above decided by the public voting on Facebook ? Clearly the public and the bok coach are singing from different hymn sheets ?

Dean Fourie was phenomenal at flank during the Currie Cup, but I would have had JC Janse Van Rensburg taking that title, and on a plane to the UK tomorrow with the Boks. He is a scrumming machine at loosehead ?

ENV 222?: Environmental Controversy (Interdisciplinary Study) Spring 2013

Through lecture, field experiences, guest presentations and group projects, students will explore the complexity within a number of key environmental controversies, exploring its scientific, social, cultural, ethical, legal and personal contexts. These socio scientific issues can be described as, ?ill defined, multidisciplinary, value laden, and constrained by missing knowledge? as opposed to more traditional issues that are based on approaches using disciplinary knowledge, are objectively oriented, engage the ?right? procedures, and often result in a single right/wrong answer. SSI is also a pedagogical strategy with clearly defined goals: it aims to stimulate and promote individual intellectual development in morality and ethics, as well as awareness of the interdependence between science and society.

Prerequisite: two of the following: GEOG 102 or REM 100; and EVSC 100 or GEOG 111. Students who have received credit for ENV 399 (Environmental Controversy) cannot receive credit for ENV 222.

Syria activists say warplanes hit Damascus suburbs

BEIRUT (AP) ? Syrian warplanes pounded opposition strongholds around Damascus and in the north Wednesday, as President Bashar Assad's forces intensified airstrikes against rebels seeking to topple him, activists said.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, which gathers reports from a network of activists on the ground, said government jets carried out five strikes in the eastern Ghouta district, a rebel stronghold close to the capital.

Three airstrikes also hit the rebel-held city of Maaret al-Numan that straddles a key supply route from Damascus to Aleppo, Syria largest city and a main front in the civil war. Maaret al-Numan has been under constant bombardment since it fell to the rebels on Oct. 10.

No casualties were reported in Wednesday's strikes, the Observatory said. However, at least 185 people were killed nationwide in airstrikes and artillery shelling the day before, pushing the total death toll from the relentless fighting in Syria to over 36,000 since March 2011, said Rami Abdul-Rahman, the activist group's president.

At least 47 soldiers were also killed Tuesday, according to the Observatory.

Syria's crisis began as a peaceful uprising against Assad's regime inspired by the Arab Spring but quickly morphed into a bloody civil war.

The international community remains at a loss about how to stop the war and a U.N.-proposed truce last week for a major Muslim holiday failed to take hold. More than 500 people were killed in fighting during what was supposed to be a four-day cease-fire ending Monday.

In China, the U.N.-Arab League envoy to Syria, Lakhdar Brahimi, met Wednesday with China's foreign minister to solicit Beijing's support for international efforts to stop the bloodshed.

The U.S. and other Western and Arab nations have called on Assad to step down, while Russia, China and Iran continue to back him.

In the past weeks, the regime has intensified airstrikes on rebel positions and strongholds. Activists speculate that the government's heavy reliance on air power reflects its inability to roll back rebel gains, especially in the north of the country near the border with Turkey, where rebels have control of swathes of territory.

"The Syrian regime can't do anything on the ground, and that's why they use air strikes," Abdul-Rahman said.

The international community's failure to push for an even modest truce raised fears of a prolonged conflict in Syria that could drag in its neighbors such as Turkey, Lebanon and Jordan.

Turkey's support for the Syrian rebel movement has been a particular point of tension between the former allies. Turkey has reinforced its border and fired into Syria on several occasions recently in response to shells that have landed from Syria inside Turkish territory.

Syria's Foreign Ministry spokesman, Jihad Makdessi, accused Turkey of having "destructive policies" against Damascus and claimed the Turkish foreign minister, Ahmet Davutoglu, was "targeting the security and stability" of Syria.

Makdessi was referring to Tuesday's comments by Davutoglu who expressed "great sadness" that the holiday cease-fire had failed and said his government was done talking to Assad's regime.

The spokesman insisted it was the unwillingness of Turkey and Gulf states to cease supporting the rebels that doomed the truce, the state-run SANA news agency reported late Tuesday.

Damascus views the rebels as terrorists and accuses them of being foot soldiers in a foreign plot to destroy Syria.

Earthquake in Maine rattles New England states

PORTLAND, Maine (AP) ? The earthquake that rattled southern Maine was felt in New England states as far away as Connecticut, but caused no apparent damage or injuries.

Patrons of a pizza parlor near the epicenter of Tuesday's quake didn't know what was going on when the building started shaking, but it was enough to send all 20 of them hustling outside.

"It was loudest bang you ever heard in your life. We actually thought it was an explosion of some type," said Jessica Hill, owner of Waterboro House of Pizza. "The back door and door to the basement blew open," she said.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the 4.0 magnitude quake hit around 7:12 p.m. and its epicenter, about 3 miles west of Hollis Center, Maine, was about 3 miles deep. That location is about 20 miles west of Portland. The quake was first estimated to be 4.6 magnitude but was later downgraded.

In Saco, Sue Hadiaris said, "The whole house shook. ...It was very unnerving because you could feel the floor shaking. There was a queasy feeling."

Afterward, Hadiaris called her 15-year-old niece in Falmouth to make sure she was safe. "She said, 'We can cross that off our bucket list. We've lived through an earthquake,'" Hadiaris said.

Earthquakes are rare in New England but they're not unheard of.

The strongest earthquake recorded in Maine occurred in 1904 in the Eastport area, near the state's eastern border with Canada according to the Weston Observatory at Boston College. It had an estimated magnitude of 5.7 to 5.9.

Tuesday's quake was the most powerful tremor in New England since Oct. 2, 2006, when a 4.2 magnitude quake struck Maine's Mount Desert Island, causing boulders to tumble onto Acadia National Park's Park Loop Road, said Weston Observatory Director John Ebel. The 2006 quake was one of a string of tremors and aftershocks that rocked Mount Desert Island over several months, but there's no evidence to suggest that there'll be an active sequence of aftershocks following the latest earthquake, Ebel said.

The Seabrook Station nuclear plant, about 63 miles away in New Hampshire, declared an unusual event ? the lowest of four emergency classifications ? but said it was not affected. The plant has been offline for refueling.

"There has been no impact at all to the plant from the earthquake and our refueling maintenance activities have not been affected," said Alan Griffith, spokesman for Next EnergyEra Seabrook Station.

Jim Van Dongen, public information officer for the New Hampshire Department of Safety said New Hampshire 911 got about 1,000 calls in the first hour after the quake, but they later dropped off. He said no major damage was reported.

Brief, but noticeable shaking was felt in downtown Boston and the surrounding area.

Edward Conti, who lives in a four-story apartment building in Cambridge, Mass., he was watching television when "it sounded like a car crash. Then there was another boom-boom. It was no small thing." Conti said there was no damage.

In Melrose, just north of Boston, Peter Ward said the shaking he felt seemed to last about four seconds. "It felt like a big gust of wind shaking the house. I don't want to overstate it, but the glass did rattle a little," he said.

Lynette Miller, a spokeswoman for the Maine Emergency Management Agency, said her dogs started barking several seconds before the quake on Tuesday. "It was several seconds of good shaking but nothing falling down," Miller said from her home in Readfield, about 60 miles north of Portland.

In Portland, Abbie Miller had just turned on the aging furnace in her house for the first time this season. "An hour later, things started shaking and it sounded almost like a train coming through. I thought my furnace was going to blow," she said.

East Coast quakes are rarely strong enough to be felt over a wide area. A quake of magnitude 5.8 on Aug. 23, 2011, was centered in Virginia and felt all along the coast, including in New York City and Boston. Experts say the region's geology can make the effects felt in an area up to 10 times larger than quakes of similar size on the West Coast.

Extreme 'housework' cuts the life span of female Komodo dragons

ScienceDaily (Oct. 17, 2012) ? An international team of researchers has found that female Komodo Dragons live half as long as males on average, seemingly due to their physically demanding 'housework' such as building huge nests and guarding eggs for up to six months.

The results provide important information on the endangered lizards' growth rate, lifestyle and population differences, which may help plan conservation efforts.

The Komodo dragon is the world's largest lizard. Their formidable body size enables them to serve as top predators killing water buffalo, deer and wild boar and they have also been known to kill humans.

A research team which included scientists from the University of Melbourne, Australia, Indonesia and Italy studied 400 individual Komodo Dragons for 10 years in eastern Indonesia, their only native habitat. The team then produced a model of the Dragon's growth rate, with results published in the current issue of international journal PLoS One.

Males live to around 60 years of age, reaching an average 160 metres in length and 65 kg at adulthood. However their female counterparts were estimated to live an average of 32 years and reach only 120 cm in length, and 22kg.

Dr Tim Jessop from the Department of Zoology at the University of Melbourne was a co-author on the study and said that the team were surprised by the significantly shorter lifespan of the female Komodo Dragon.

"The sex-based difference in size appears to be linked to the enormous amounts of energy females invest in producing eggs, building and guarding their nests. The process can take up to six months during which they essentially fast, losing a lot of weight and body condition, he said.

"Males and females start off at the same size until they reach sexual maturity at around seven years of age. From then on females grow slower, shorter and die younger."

The research team was keen to understand the growth rate of the Komodo Dragons as this critical process can indicate how the species prioritises its energy use in lifestyle and reproductive strategies. The results suggest that females have high energy 'costs' for reproduction resulting in their smaller size, whereas to reproduce successfully, males must keep increasing in size.

The results could have dramatic consequences for the endangered species as early female deaths may be exacerbating competition between males over the remaining females, possibly explaining why males are the world's largest lizards.

"These results may seem odd to humans when the life span between Australian men and women differ by five years. But each species has different strategies to pass on their genes. For example humans invest a lot of energy in few children as raising them is very energy intensive, whereas insects will have hundreds of offspring with no input into their rearing."

Amnesty International workers go on strike

(AP) ? Dozens of Amnesty International workers are walking off the job in London and at least four other countries in a dispute over how management will deal with layoffs.

The one day walkout Wednesday largely involves workers in the organization's London office.

The workers say that Amnesty has changed the rules on redundancy ahead of layoffs amid a planned reorganization of the human rights organization.

Amnesty says the organization respects the right of the workers to strike, and noted that only one-third of the workforce chose to do so.

The group says in a statement that it must change the way it operates to be more effective. That includes moving away from a centralized London base of 500 people to 10 regional hubs closer to where human rights violations occur.

Home Improvement Accident Causes Natural Gas Explosion ...

(EMAILWIRE.COM, October 16, 2012 ) San Francisco, CA- Two men in upstate New York caused a natural gas explosion when they tried to install a home water heater. The accident caused the men to be severely burned, destroyed three homes, and damaged 20 others. The two men, an 86-year-old former handyman who owned the Corning, New York residence and his 38-year-old grandson, had failed to disconnect the gas line properly. The blast on a Friday morning in August was reportedly heard throughout the city of 11,000.

The do-it-yourselfer octogenarian had lost his sense of smell, and his grandson was suffering from a sinus condition. Thus, neither detected the odor of the natural gas seeping into the basement before one of them lit a propane torch in order to sweat copper fittings on the gas pipe.

The Corning police chief said the men were pulled from the wreckage by neighbors. Authorities said they survived due to having been working in a corner of the basement, somewhat shielding them from the blast that moved up and away from them. The home?s walls blew straight out. Its roof went straight up in the air, according to the local fire chief. When a rescue crew arrived to airlift them to a hospital, it found wreckage from neighborhood homes hanging from trees and floating in a nearby swimming pool.

A veteran plumber on the plumbing board in nearby Binghamton, New York, points to the incident as the latest proof that tighter standards are needed for potentially dangerous jobs. The board official called for an end to local laws letting homeowners, and in some cases unqualified contractors, perform such potentially dangerous work. The two men whose home repair attempts turned into a demolition had not violated any local ordinances, the Corning fire chief noted.

Besides the danger of devastating explosion, botched plumbing work can cause air and water contamination, notes Rudy Gaspar, who has over 40 years experience in the trade. He added, ?There are so many things that can go wrong,? and urged local communities to step up site inspections and review of work permits. Although some local regulations contain loopholes that less-qualified contractors do the work, Gaspar cautions that potentially dangerous jobs like installing gas-fired water heaters should only be done by ?properly trained and licensed plumbers.?

Even before the incident, plumbing board officials and trade groups had been advocating tighter regulations, to prevent unqualified persons from attempting potentially dangerous plumbing projects. The Binghamton city council recently voted to withdraw with an agreement recognizing licenses from Oneonta, another city in the area, after finding that some plumbers based in other cities were getting licensed in Oneonta due to lower licensing standards there.

Halving food losses would feed an additional billion people, Finnish study finds

ScienceDaily (Oct. 10, 2012) ? More efficient use of the food production chain and a decrease in the amount of food losses will dramatically help maintaining the planet's natural resources and improve people's lives. Researchers in Aalto University have proved a valid estimation, for the first time, for how many people could be fed with reducing food losses.

The world's population is an estimated seven billion people. An additional one billion can be fed from our current resources, if the food losses could be halved. This can be achieved if the lowest loss percentage achieved in any region could be reached globally.

"There isn't enough clean water everywhere on Earth. Significantly more agricultural land cannot be cleared as well as certain raw material minerals for fertilizers are running low. At the same time, a quarter of the amount of calories in produced food is lost or wasted at different stages of food production chain, which results in unnecessary resources loss," says Matti Kummu, post-doctoral researcher at Aalto University.

The new study is the first to evaluate the impact of food losses and its relationship to resources on a global scale. Annually 27 m3 of clean water, 0.031 hectares of agricultural land and 4.3 kilos of fertilizers per every inhabitant in the world is wasted in food losses.

"Agriculture uses over 90 percent of the fresh water consumed by humans and most of the raw materials used in fertilizers. More efficient food production and the reduction of food losses are very important matters for the environment as well as future food security," Kummu adds.

Further, for the first time, the global food losses in terms of kilocalories per person were estimated.

As a result of food loss in the food production chain, it was determined that globally 614 kilocalories per every person a day are lost. Without this loss, present global food production would yield 2,609 kilocalories of edible food a day for every inhabitant in the world. Thus, by halving the food losses, we could feed 8 billion people with the currently used resources.

This study was published in Science of the Total Environment. The researchers of VU University Amsterdam and the University of Bonn also participated in the research. In addition to Aalto University, the research was also funded by Maa- ja vesitekniikan tuki ry, IWT Flanders and NWO, the Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research.

The REAL Goal of a Manuscript Critique ? Fiction Notes

When you do a manuscript critique at a conference, you must be ready to push for an answer to a crucial question; and you must have a back-up plan.

I?ve been backstage at conferences, in the break room where the editors are gathering and chatting. I?ve heard them come back from a critique session and talk.

Editor: I told the writer that the story was great and the voice was great, but they just didn?t match up. This is a picture book, but the writing is like a YA novel. They just wanted to argue and tell me a long story about why they wrote the picture book. Why would they waste their time and my time that way?

Indeed. At a manuscript critique, you can expect to hear at least one good thing about your story. But then?you asked for an honest critique!?you will hear some things that are not-so-good, need-work, needs-rethinking, WILL-mean-a-total-revision. Duh. Editors are in the BUSINESS of telling writers how to revise. Do you think a critique will be any different? No.

So, when you go into a critique, expect a laundry list of things that need to be done. Do not take your ego into the critique with you. This cannot be an emotional breakdown. Take a notepad and take notes about what needs work? Ask critical questions that show you understand their opinion and would like to understand even deeper.

Close the Deal with a Crucial Question

After listening, politely ask, ?If I make these revisions, would you like to see the manuscript again?? This is the REAL goal of your session, an invitation to submit this manuscript again.

If the editor responds yes, you?re done. Chat for a minute or so longer, if there?s time, but get out early if you can. You got what you wanted and needed.

What if the editor says, ?No, this isn?t something I can publish.?

Back Up Plan?Pitch

Then?you pitch! A pitch to an agent is a brief distillation of your novel into a 30-second teaser. You?ll want to have pitches for 3-5 manuscripts ready to go. After listening to the editor?s presentations at the conference and talking with him/her about your mss, choose one or two of the manuscripts. And follow-up the previous question with a pitch about these stories.

And again, ask, ?May I send you this manuscript (synopsis and sample chapters)?

The 10-15 minutes of private time with an editor or agent is a great opportunity to get feedback on your current story; but it?s also a great time to drum up interest in a different story. Don?t waste this precious time trying to justify some minor point in the critique. Listen, learn, sell.

Smoked salmon blamed for salmonella outbreak

THE HAGUE, Netherlands (AP) ? Smoked salmon tainted with salmonella has sickened hundreds of people in the Netherlands, authorities said, sparking major recalls there and in the U.S.

U.S. health authorities say they are also investigating whether the salmon could be at the root of a multi-state outbreak of the illness.

The Netherlands' National Institute for Public Health and the Environment said the salmon was traced to a Dutch company called Foppen, which sells fish to many major supermarkets in the Netherlands and stores around the world.

In the U.S. Foppen said it only supplied the fish to CostCo Wholesale Corp. It did not believe the contaminated fish was sold to any other countries.

The Dutch public health institute said that around 200 people ? and likely more ? have been sickened in the Netherlands by a strain of the bacteria called Salmonella Thompson.

A representative for the U.S. Centers for Disease and Control Prevention, Lola Russell, says the federal agency has 85 recorded cases of the same strain from 27 states starting from July 1. Without an outbreak, she said the average number of such cases over that time would be about 30.

"We've investigating a possible link between the cases in the U.S. and cases in the Netherlands," Russell said.

That process entails state public health officials interviewing patients to find out what they may have eaten before they got sick, including the smoked salmon.

Russell said 10 people have been hospitalized, with no deaths.

Craig Wilson, vice president of food safety at Costco, said the company immediately pulled the smoked salmon from shelves after receiving a call from Foppen late Monday. CostCo also blocked sale of the salmon in stores, meaning the products won't scan at registers.

The smoked salmon was sold under the Foppen name, as well as under Costco's store-brand name, Kirkland. Wilson did not know how much of the product was sold.

Customers who purchased the items will be called by CostCo to notify them of the recall, Wilson said. The calls will be followed up with a letter.

Wilson said Costco's independent testing of the smoked salmon hasn't yet turned up any positive results for salmonella. He said the company has not received any reports of illnesses.

In the Netherlands Foppen estimated the number of infections could rise.

Since the company set up a public information phone line two days ago, de Vries said about 1,400 people had called and around 350 of the callers "reported symptoms consistent with a salmonella infection."

Those infected by the salmonella bacteria can suffer symptoms including fever, vomiting and diarrhea.

Foppen, which processes fish in the Netherlands and at a factory in Greece, is investigating the cause of the outbreak.

"The investigation into the cause is under way and has been narrowed down to one production line at one factory (in Greece)," De Vries said. "We can't yet say what the cause of the infection was."

Foppen has halted all production of smoked salmon until the investigation is completed, he added.

Apple posts fix for Verizon iPhone 5 Wi-Fi bug

    5 hrs.

Apple has rolled out a fix for an annoying (and potentially costly) issue affecting some Verizon?iPhone 5 owners.?

It seems that some folks who happen to use Verizon's service have been experiencing peculiar data?connectivity?issues. Sometimes their iPhones will rely on cellular data even though they are connected to a Wi-Fi network. This means that they may not always?get the fastest data?connection possible?? assuming that their Wi-Fi speeds are superior to the 4G LTE speeds, of course?? and that they're eating away at their monthly?data allotments when they don't have to.

The solution for this bug is pretty darn simple though. You just have to follow some instructions issued by Apple.

Just head into the Settings app on your iPhone 5, tap on "General" and select the "About" section. An alert should appear to inform you that your carrier settings have been updated. To complete the process, you'll have to tap "OK" on this alert, hold the sleep/wake button until the "slide to power off" prompt appears. At that point you should just power down your iPhone and then turn it back on.?

    That's it.

To confirm that the?update worked properly, you can once again open the Settings app, tap on "General" and select "About." You should see "Verizon 13.1" in the "Carrier" section if everything went well.

That's one iPhone 5?issue fixed, several more to go. There's still talk of the device's tendency to chip and scratch?and?a?Maps app which even Apple CEO Tim Cook declared to have fallen short on the company's commitment to "deliver the best experience possible."?We'll have to see when and how Apple will address these woes.

Want more tech news?or interesting?links? You'll get plenty of both if you keep up with Rosa Golijan, the writer of this post, by following her on?Twitter, subscribing to her?Facebook?posts,?or circling her?on?Google+.
